1 WHAT IS EIDERDOWN?
Eiderdown comes from a wild duck as opposed to a domestic one. Eiderdown is the only down on the market stemming from a wild bird. Every June the big, wild, arctic Eider duck (somateria mollissima) returns ashore from its habitat on the ocean to nest, lay its eggs and then returns back to the sea when the ducklings have hatched.

Eiderdown is the only down stemming from live birds that is not plucked. It is a remarkable thought that the birds that gave their down to a new Eiderdown comforter are still alive and well somewhere out in the rough North Atlantic Ocean. Meanwhile, the proud owner sleeps calmly underneath the comforter made from their down. Due to hormonal changes during the egg-laying period, the female Eider sheds 17 grams of dark metal gray, incredibly light, soft down into its nest. By doing this the female Eider bares a spot on its belly through which it emits heat for incubating the eggs. A comforter with one kilogram of filling may contain Eiderdown processed from the raw material of over 60 nests.

Eiderdown is the only down that solely stems from female birds, while domestic down is from both female and male birds. The male Eiders give no down and do not sit on nests. Since Eiderdown is only from nesting birds, it is also the only down that comes solely from fully grown birds because Eiders start laying eggs at age 4 years and may reach an average age of 25 years. Down from grown birds is mature so it is fully developed. Conventional duck down on the other hand is usually a by-product in meat farming and therefore from young birds with a relatively small down cluster.

Eiders have for over a century been a protected species in Iceland. Eiderdown harvesting is a tradition in Iceland which has been practiced for hundreds of years. The tradition of harvesting down for comforters was brought to Iceland with the Norse settlers in the 9th century. Remains of Eiderdown have been found in archaeological excavation of Viking ships in Norway.

In Iceland, the eiderdown is harvested from the nests and replaced with hay. Recent scientific research confirms common knowledge: no harm is done, neither to the bird nor its eggs. Eiderdown harvesting is environmentally friendly, it is a sustainable, green industry. The down harvesters protect the nesting colonies from the Eiders natural enemies such as mink, fox, raven and seagull. Eiders in Iceland have for generations become so accustomed to human protection that they directly seek to nest near populated areas. Although Icelandic eiders are completely wild and live all their live on the ocean, they have become incredibly tame; some Eiders can even be petted while sitting on their nests. Icelandic Eiders thus behave quite differently from eiders in other countries where Eider is considered game, therefore hunted and scared of humans just as any other wild creature.

Eiderdown is cleaned by highly specialized dry processing technology which Icelanders have developed. Processed eiderdown is sold mainly to down washers in Japan and Germany who in turn sell it to comforter makers.
2 WHAT IS THE PRICE FOR EIDERDOWN?
Eiderdown is a very exclusive products with amazing quality and very limited supply. The prices thus vary constantly; please ask us for a current quote. Click here for a few price references in Japan.

The total worldwide annual harvest of Eiderdown could be carried by one small truck - while the total annual industrial duck down production exceeds 10 thousand tons. From January until December 2010 Japan imported 3500 pounds real Eiderdown from Iceland, German speaking Europe took the remainder – and most of that goes through us. In an average spring in Iceland only 5000 pounds Eiderdown are harvested. Iceland is the only country where there is an Eiderdown trade worth mentioning. The most common Eiderdown comforter size in Japan contains a little over two pounds Eiderdown.

Even though an Eiderdown comforter may last 20 years, demand far exceeds supply – hence the high prices. So most people will have to go without an Eiderdown comforter forever. Eiderdown is for connoisseurs.

The annual Icelandic Eiderdown harvests have, for environmental reasons, been getting smaller. In 2002 the harvest fell to only 4000 pounds after having been 6000 pounds for decades. Altered feeding conditions in the ocean are to blame, but the harvest has since stabilized at 5000 pounds. Eiderdown is wild and impossible to farm in the conventional sense. The Eiderdown supply is naturally limited and, if anything, it is dwindling. The total export value of dry processed, unwashed Eiderdown may in an average year pass $2 million while the retail value of goods from this same lot likely passes $40 million.

Though Eiderdown harvesting was common in Scandinavia in the Middle Ages, this industry is now long dead. Archaeological excavations in Norway indicate that the Vikings took silk Eiderdown comforters with them on their ships, and stone age remnants in Finland show that Eiderdown was used in clothing. Finland and Canada also harvest Eiderdown but in minuscule quantities compared to Iceland. Currently, the overwhelming majority of Eiderdown in the world market comes from Iceland. Proper gathering and high tech processing methods have been developed in Iceland so Icelandic Eiderdown simply is the best in quality. Still there are about 350 Eiderdown harvesters in Iceland, 6 main processors, and about 20 harvesters who process their own lots. In addition to these there are 7 wholesale exporters who sell the Eiderdown to buyers in German speaking Europe, as well as Japan.
3 WHAT MAKES EIDERDOWN SLEEP SO GOOD?
The Eiderdown clusters cling together like Velcro, to form a big soft, grey material that has less specific weight than other comforter fill materials. Other down falls apart into its single elements when touched while Eiderdown appears as a cohesive uniform mass. The lightness makes it possible to use less fill material per square unit in a comforter. This way the comforter can be lighter than with common materials. Lightness characterizes luxury in bedding. A single Eiderdown unit which measures one inch in diameter weighs only 2 milligrams. It takes 250 thousand such down clusters to form one pound of Eiderdown. The Eiderdown unit consists of concentric fibers. These Eiderdown fibers are so fine that in thickness they measure only a fraction of a human hair.
Eiderdown has a unique thermal insulation because eiders inhabit the ocean around the Polar Circle. The eider, being a warm blooded creature, has therefore developed nature’s best protection against the freezing winter temperatures in its habitat, the rough North Atlantic Ocean, where temperatures frequently drop below freezing. The ocean only stays liquid because of its salinity.
Eiderdown has unique qualities, as it regulates temperature and moisture far better than other materials. Eiderdown comforters let extra body heat and moisture through, unlike high density, high specific weight goose down - or synthetic comforters. Therefore eiderdown comforters do not make their users feel sweaty and stuffy during the night which interrupts sleep. An Eiderdown comforter enables the user to sleep comfortably warm and dry. The sleep is therefore uninterrupted and relaxing, which is necessary for a good night’s rest.
4 WHAT IS THE GODI® BRAND?
GODI was the name that the Icelandic Eiderdown Exporter's Association chose for themselves in the late 1980s; Godi refers to a chieftain in Iceland during the medieval times. For an export initiative, we have trademarked the name.

We ship within 2 business days of payment. We ship with UPS and USPS. Estimated delivery time for the cheapest delivery option is approximately 2 weeks. In case you need your order faster, expedited shipping is available at an extra cost and your products will ship within 2 working days, not including weekends, throughout the USA. Simply choose the available option in the checkout.
8 WHAT IS YOUR REFUND POLICY ON PRODUCTS?
You do not have to worry when ordering - in case you order the wrong product or wrong size, you can always exchange it at no cost. If you want to cancel your order, you may do so and we will refund your purchase price (less shipping costs and a 25% restocking fee) for any reason within the first two weeks from the date you receive your original order. This refund will be processed within 30 days from the time we receive your product intact and in an unopened box. Please note that we cannot accept opened packages: this is a hygienic product and cannot be resold after it has been opened. Return costs are the responsibility of the customer. We regret that we cannot accept "bill recipient" packages. Please note that if Gift Certificates were used with this order, you forfeit this guarantee as we cannot refund once we have given away money on orders or hotel bookings already.

9 WHAT IS THE WARRANTY ON THE PRODUCTS?
There is a 3-year limited warranty on any workmanship and/or material defects. We use patented fill fiber, and blended anti-allergenic natural feather and down fills, double stitching to assure your products will withstand years of sleep and corresponding wash/dry cycles. Washing and drying the products at least every now and then revitalizes fabrics and filling so you get the quality sleep you deserve. Even after many uses and years, you still have a perfectly clean, healthy, and super luxurious product.
10 ARE THERE ANY HIDDEN COSTS ON HOTEL BOOKINGS?
There are no hidden costs - neither for products nor hotel bookings: All charges, taxes, shipping cost etc. is included in our price: The prices really are that good! Before you make any kind of commitment, you will be shown a review page with all Gift Certificates and Sales Taxes applied so you know exactly what you are being charged.

Please note that hotels may have other charges that are not transparent for us and are not included in the rate - for example parking fees, or other local fees.
11 CAN I CHANGE MY HOTEL BOOKING?
The hotel bookings are arranged significantly below the usual pricing available anywhere else in the marketplace. This is only done through special arrangements with our hotel partners. We are very happy we can provide this service as a pure bonus to our bedding product customers. As such, they are not a source of income for us, and thus CANNOT BE CANCELLED OR CHANGED THROUGH H. Having said this, we book these rates at the conditions of the hotel and fully prepay them in our name, but with the specific confirmation number that we send to you. So it may be worth contacting the hotel to see if they will accept a change to your booking. This includes changes to check-in or check-out dates, changes to the name of the reservation, changes of the length of stay, room type or rate.
12 CAN I CANCEL MY HOTEL BOOKING?
The hotel bookings are arranged significantly below the usual pricing available anywhere else in the market and only through special arrangements with our hotel partners. We are very happy we can provide this service as a pure bonus to our bedding product customers. As such, they are not a source of income for us, and thus CANNOT BE CANCELLED.
13 WHAT IS THE BEST AVAILABLE RATE?
The Best Available Rate is the rate sold by the hotel through Global Distribution Systems - already reduced by all possible discounts and commissions, and often significantly below the official room rates that you can book directly at the hotels. You typically will not find a better rate in the market, neither long term nor short term. It is often a rather basic rate, with no service, no breakfast, nothing included. We match the best available rate AND we often provide much better rates with significant upgrades at the same price. Thus by using Gift Certificates, you get better rooms - for example a King Suite instead of a Double Queen Room - better views, such as valley view instead of forest view, better service with breakfast included, without paying extra. This is what we LOVE about upgrades through H.

16 HOW FAR IN ADVANCE AND HOW SHORT TERM CAN I BOOK HOTELS?
You can book anything for which the H service prompts available- this can be last minute and more than one year in advance. Please note that hotel bookings CANNOT be cancelled - also see below !, such that you do not run into an unpleasant surprise when booking too far in advance and not being able to go at short notice.
17 HOW MANY ROOMS CAN I BOOK IN ONE TRANSACTION?
You can book only one room at a time for a maximum of 4 (four) guests in one transaction. There may be restrictions on room availability, but anything that works with the system will work.
18 WHAT DETERMINES A HOTEL RATING?
Hotel ratings are determined by a number of criteria, usually related to the availability of certain services (for example a restaurant on site or not). Typically these services are only worth operating with a corresponding level of nightly rates, you will find that there is a correlation of the Hotel rating (in stars) and the quality of the hotel. This is not always the case though. Our experience shows us, especially the quality of bedding products at 4- and 5-Star levels, that it depends more on the supplier delivering great quality products than on the hotel doing their job well. We thus of course recommend that you preferably visit hotels made by us.
19 HOW DO INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS BOOK HOTELS?
International customers book hotels on H just like any other customer. Please note that your bank may have restrictions for a US bank credit card processing company trying to charge your credit card, so Bit Coin or Paypal may be your preferred payment options. Also please note that this service is operated under USA law and that our local USA terms and conditions apply. 20 CAN I USE GIFT CERTIFICATES OUTSIDE THE H WEBSITE?
The Gift Certificates are an exclusive service on the H website. You cannot use them outside of the H website. One of the reasons that we can offer these outstanding conditions is because everything is fully automated, this does not work as soon as we leave the H website.
21 CAN I RECEIVE CASH INSTEAD OF USING THE GIFT CERTIFICATES?
You can use the Gift Certificates only on the H website and you cannot receive cash for them. You also cannot sell the Gift Certificates outside of our H platform. The Gift Certificates are tied to your personal account on the H website. They are not transferable and you cannot give them away.
22 CAN I GIVE THE GIFT CERTIFICATES AWAY?
At this point, the Gift Certificates are tied to your personal account on the H website. They are not transferable and you cannot give them away. You also cannot sell the Gift Certificates outside the H platform. However, you can invite friends to join the H website - and with each invite BOTH YOU AND YOUR FRIEND will receive a $50 Gift Certificate! We thank you for your recommendations.
23 HOW LONG ARE THE GIFT CERTIFICATES VALID?
The Gift Certificates have a validity of one year. However, under certain circumstances we will extend the validity of the Gift Certificates.
24 HOW MANY GIFT CERTIFICATES CAN I APPLY TO ONE TRANSACTIONS?
You can apply Gift Certificates to one transaction until you have reduced the price of products by 25%. Or until you are using a maximum of one Gift Certificate per night on a hotel booking. Please note: If the last Gift Certificate “does not fit”, H will reduce its value to get you the maximum possible discount. While this is good on one side, it also takes some of the value of a Gift Certificate. H will automatically apply Gift Certificates where possible. Because it is automated, H cannot anticipate which or how many Gift Certificates you would choose to apply. You always have the ability to remove a Gift Certificate from the cart and apply a different one in its place – or none at all. This is entirely up to you.
25 HOW DO I CLEAN MY PRODUCTS?
Professional cleaning is recommended. Here are important instructions that will help maintain the superior product characteristics over the products life span.
26 WHAT WASHING MACHINE & TUMBLE DRYER SHOULD BE USED?
For the laundering of your Hanseatic® 5StarBed® products, the capacity of the washing machine and the tumble dryer should be at least 80 pounds. An even higher capacity would be recommended. To prevent any damage from the product and to ensure proper re-fluffing after washing / drying, the washing machine and/or the tumble dryer should be filled up with maximum 25% of its total loading-capacity. On top loading washing machines, please always use two pillows to counterbalance (if you only have one pillow, balance with a large towel).
27 WHAT WASHING PROCESS IS REQUIRED?
The main washing should be done at a temperature of 40°C (cold or warm) in a “gentle washing” modus (less motion / much relaxation) for approx. 15-20 minutes. Afterwards rinse 4 times without any detergents, each rinsing cycle with a duration of approximately 5 minutes. The third and fourth cycle should be done with a high water level. After completion of the fourth cycle, spin the product at high rotation speed. In case you accidentally set a higher temperature, the filling of Hanseatic® 5StarBed® products ensure that you still retain perfect product characteristics. However, the high temperatures do wear on the product, and you lose the 3-Year Warranty.
28 WHAT DETERGENTS SHOULD BE USED?
Only mild detergents are to be used and the dosage should be kept to a minimum => max. 3 ounces per pillow! After washing, the detergents have to be rinsed out completely, as otherwise the filling material might stick together during the drying process.
29 HOW CAN I MACHINE DRY THE PRODUCTS?
To ensure the best possible results, the drying of all Hanseatic® 5StarBed® products has to be executed very cautiously, which means that they must NOT be dried at a temperature exceeding 60°C. The drum of the dryer has to oscillate (the direction of rotation has to change randomly) during the drying process. It is important to stick these guidelines, as this way you are guaranteed the best performance of your products over their complete life time.

Gold members can invite friends - and will receive a $50 Gift Certificate for each confirmed invitation.

34 WHAT IS THE NUMBER OF READY-TO-USE GIFT CERTIFICATES?
Every time you take the initiative on this site, for instance giving us feedback, placing an order, or inviting others, we reward you with a Gift Certificate. We reward our members for going direct. The number indicated is the number of funded Gift Certificates that are ready for use, that are funded, not used yet, and not expired. It thus also represents the number of nights that can be booked at the subsidized rates through H.
